What do people see when they Google you or your business?
When someone searches for your business online, the results they see in the first few seconds shape their entire impression of your brand. Starting with your website, your Google Profile, your social media, old listings, reviews & articles and any outdated info.
If you want to understand how your business really shows up online, you don’t need fancy tools to start. You just need Google, a little time, and a clear process.
This step-by-step audit will help you see what your customers see, clean up outdated information, and uncover new opportunities to sell, teach, or grow.
You can do this on your own. And if you want help later, you’ll know exactly what to ask for.
1: Google Your Business Name
Open your browser and search:
- Your business name
- Your business name plus location
- Your main service
- Your name as well
Action step: Write down what shows up on page one.
Look for:
- Your website
- Google Business Profile
- Social media pages
- Old directories
- Reviews
- News articles
Action step: This is the first thing your customers will see. If it’s confusing or outdated, customers notice.
2: Click Every Top Link
Now click through the top results and ask:
- Is the information correct?
- Are the hours current?
- Are services still accurate?
- Does the branding match? (photos, fonts, company colors, logo)
- Are all of the links working?
Action step: Make a list of anything that feels old, unclear, or no longer true. Then update it. Outdated information breaks trust faster than not having information at all.
3: Check for Consistency
Compare your:
- Website
- Google profile
- Social media bios
- Online listings
Action step: Your business name, phone number, hours, and description should match everywhere. Small inconsistencies confuse search engines and customers.
4: Look for Content Gaps
Be on the lookout for what’s missing.
Ask yourself:
- Do I answer common customer questions anywhere online?
- Do I have recent blog posts?
- Do I explain my services clearly?
- Do I educate people before asking them to buy?
Action step: Missing content usually means missed opportunities. Make sure you go through the steps of your online buying process.
5: Use Search Results as Clues
Look at the search suggestions and related searches at the bottom of Google.
These show what people actually want to know.
Examples:
- How much does this service cost?
- How does this work?
- What’s the best option near me?
These topics are perfect for:
- Blog posts
- Videos
- Workshops
- Email content
- New service offers
Action step: How can your services be the answer to all who need them? Make sure your services are the answer to someone's problem.
6: Turn Searches Into Offers
Instead of guessing what to sell, use what people are already searching for. If people keep asking the same questions:
- Teach it.
- Package it.
- Offer a consultation.
- Create a workshop.
- Build a service around it.
Action step: Search behavior serves as a form of market research that is free of charge. Join the groups that could use your services. Be the answer to a problem that arises. Insert your knowledge and experience without being creepy. Groups are a free ride.
7: Run This Audit - Quarterly
Search results change. Businesses grow. Offers evolve. Re-running this audit will help you organize your thought process when approaching clients online or in person. It helps you:
- Stay current.
- Spot new opportunities.
- Improve visibility.
- Strengthen trust.
Action step: Stay ahead of your business. Create the brand to be proud of. When you update your site, you are more proud to share it.
