As a small business grows a key trait you see often is their willingness to say, “I can do that for
you.” It might seem like a smart phrase to use for the short term, but for the long term, not so
much. Long term, it gets a bit tricky trying to do it ALL. You end up getting overwhelmed.
Tricks of the trade suggest that you take on jobs that you love to do. That way the job runs
smoothly, the job gets done before the due date and the customer and you are very happy.
I have found that doing those things that you love will make your life easier and much more
satisfying.
Let’s look at the other way, taking on jobs that you can do but don’t necessarily like to do. The
job starts, one or two things don’t go your way, you then curse at the job. You are unhappy, the
job deadline doesn’t get met and the customer and you are not very happy. Not a good day at
the office.
The tip that I hear more from experts is, “create a niche for yourself”. It’s scary to shorten your
window of opportunity in fear of not having enough work. If you are good at what you do,
especially here in Hawaii, the coconut wireless will be your friend and will bring more business
your way. Do the things you are good at and that you love to do.
I used to say that social media was my go-to. I realized that my organizational skills catapulted
me to doing more than social media work. For the past two years I have added web design and
project management to my skills list. I found a love for all three but only take on what I can
handle. I refer out business to the others in my circle so they can have more work doing what
they love to do, too. Everybody wins!
Go forward and do what you love to do. Everyone will be happier, including you.
